Do you grind your teeth in your sleep? Or maybe during the day? Teeth grinding, or bruxism, is an unconscious activity which afflicts many of us at some time in our lives, usually when we are most stressed. Some people are chronic night grinders who cause serious damage to their teeth unless the problem is corrected.
Teeth grinding can cause facial soreness and headaches as well as pain in the teeth and along the jawline. If you are experiencing these symptoms, ask your dentist to check for signs of tooth erosion.
Bruxism can be corrected by improving your sleep patterns and making a conscious effort to relax your jaw. The problem usually subsides when the stress subsides. But if the grinding persists, your dentist may need to prescribe a night-time mouth guard to protect your teeth from further damage.
