We often take our sight for granted. And some of us take chances every day that risk vision health. Remember these practical safety tips, for your eyes only.
Wear safety glasses, goggles and shields.
At Home
Safety glasses protect against harsh sprays and fumes; they block flying objects when pruning, lawn mowing or working with any power tools. (Check your hardware store.)
At Work
Safety glasses protect against harsh sprays and fumes, intense light rays or airborne particles and sparks from power equipment. (Reminder: Shatterproof glasses are no substitute for safety goggles.)
At Play
Safety glasses protect against fast-moving balls during racquet sports and chlorinated water while swimming. (Check your sports shop.)
Protect against sunlight. Wear sunglasses that block at least 60% of ultraviolet A and 95% of ultraviolet B. Over the years, even small amounts of unfiltered sunlight can do lasting damage to your eyes and lead to the development of cataracts.
Don't be lazy with contact lenses. Keep them clean to protect your eyes from infection and eye strain. If you work with chemical fumes, fine airborne particles or high heat, consider wearing glasses instead of contacts on the job.
Watch for rapid changes in your vision. It can be affected by many conditions such as the early onset of diabetes, severe stress, medications, headaches and prolonged computer work. Be alert ... don't delay a trip to your eye doctor if you notice sudden blurring, decreasing ability to focus, unusual sensitivity to light or other changes.
