First Aid to the Rescue

You don't have to feel helpless in the face of an injury or sudden illness. This chart can help you become familiar with basic first aid and show you when a condition calls for emergency medical attention.

  Injury First Aid When to Seek Medical Help
  Bee Sting   Scrape away stinger with sharp, clean edge.
Cold compress
Hives; Breathing problems; history of prior allergic reaction.
  Bleeding Apply direct pressure. Elevate injury. Heavy bleeding or sign of shock (weak pulse; confusion; cold, damp skin).
  Burn (first
degree and small
second degree)
Cold water or compress. NO OINTMENT. Loose, dry bandage. Extensive damage, blistering. Infection.
  Broken Bone Immobilize injured part. Control any bleeding. Call doctor. Call ambulance if neck, back, legs involved.
  Chemical
Splash in Eye
Immediately flush with water 15-30 minutes. After flushing, call or see doctor promptly.
  Cuts/Scrapes Apply pressure to stop bleeding. Clean.
Bandage to keep clean.
Deep enough for stitches. Bleeding spurts.
  Head Injury Ice bumps, bruises, control any bleeding.
Clean surface wounds.
Sign of concussion; Dizziness, nausea, confusion, loss of consciousness.
  Poisoning Keep victim calm. Call poison control center immediately. The universal number for poison control centers is 1-800-222-1222. Calls are routed to the local poison control center. As of 11/03, syrup of ipecac is no longer recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Call 9-1-1 in case of convulsions, cessation of breathing or unconsciousness.
  Sprain RICE: Rest, ice, compression (bandage), Elevate. Possible fracture, severe pain, swelling, numbness, loss of function.
  Unconscious Keep victim's air passage open. Call for help. Check for pulse, breathing. Rescue breathing/CPR if needed. Always call emergency service (911) then do rescue breathing/CPR.

Take precautions: Contagious illnesses like AIDS and hepatitis are carried in body fluids, especially in blood. Protect yourself when possible by wearing gloves or a face mask. Always wash your hands after providing first aid.
