After reviewing 4,500 studies on cancer and nutrition in 1998, 15 medical experts from around the world presented these recommendations for reducing your risk of cancer:
- Eat a plant-based diet and reduce red meat consumption.
- Eat more legumes (beans). Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
- Eat less sugar, salt and processed foods.
- Avoid or limit alcohol — 1 drink a day increases the risk of breast cancer in women; more than 1-2 drinks a day increases other cancer risks for both men and women.
- Lose excess weight; don't gain more than 11 pounds during adulthood.
- Get brisk exercise every day.
